The Brooklyn Flea: 3 floors of folksy blissPosted: February 22, 2011
This weekend was by far one of the windiest weekends we’ve had in NYC this year. So entertaining visiting out-of-towners (upstate NY and Ocean City, MD) proved somewhat of a challenge as none of us wanted to be exposed to the blistering winds for too long. Our solution? The currently indoor Brooklyn Flea in Fort Greene. During the warmer months the market moves outdoors to various locations, but its winter home is the beautiful former site of the Williamsburg Savings Bank at 1 Hanson Place (just outside the Atlantic Terminal, home to plenty of accessible subways).
With three floors and over 100 vendors, the market has pretty much everything for lovers of local food, crafts, antiques, vintage anything but especially clothing, tchotchkes, jewelry, etc. As you can probably guess, I was particularly chuffed by all the local food vendors, crafters, and vintage kitchen-ware.
My favorite vendors included
- Christina Stankard jewelry: some of the daintiest, most delicate jewelry I’ve seen in a while AND it’s reasonably priced – a simple gold-filled chain with a gem-drop pendant is $30.
- Liddabit sweets: local, artisanal and seasonal treats. They had samples of their beer-pretzel caramels which were melt-in-your-mouth salty-caramel-beer delicious.
- Fine and Raw Chocolate: yup, it’s raw chocolate, which is WAY creamier and tastier than its over-precessed grocery store counterpart. Fine and Raw use fair-trade chocolate from small farmer co-ops who specify in shade-grown, heirloom chocolate. How awesome is that? I tried samples of the sea salt bar, which I highly recommend to all chocolate lovers.
By far my favorite vendor was ceramicist Susannah Tisue of SKT Ceramics. She hand-makes all of her mugs, tumblers, and cups in her studio in Williamsburg. The mugs feature the most adorable images of animals and other country life (check out this cabin mug). I resisted buying 3 different mugs only because my current mug collection just about exceeds the cabinet space in my apartment. These mugs are the perfect way to add a little bit of happiness to that early morning first cup of coffee or tea.
